In the '70s, the Tom Selleck mustache was all the rage among men. In the '80s, the scruffy look, a la Don Johnson, was popular. In the '90s, highly stylized facial hair, such as the goatee, was in, particularly among young professionals who did not want to conform to the look traditionally associated with corporate culture.

Today, one style no longer dominates. "It's pretty much an individual choice now," said Elmhurst resident Brian Murphy, who at 60 is sporting a bushy gray-and-white beard. "People grow a beard because they want it."
