St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, which celebrates its 80th birthday this year, has seen many changes through the years.
According to former hospital administrator John Birdzell, the hospital became a reality when Col. Walter J. Riley (founder of the First National Bank of East Chicago) and John W. Lees (former superintendent of Inland Steel Co.) partnered with the Sisters of Ancilla Domini to bring hospital facilities and medical services to the industrial heartland of Northwest Indiana.
Under Riley's leadership, the Manufacturers Association of East Chicago pledged $500,000 in 1926 to stimulate interest in a new ...
