If Cubs manager Lou Piniella doesn't always look like a guy whose team has the best record in baseball, even at the height of a nine-game winning streak, that's nothing new to longtime Cub Ron Santo.

''That's just how Leo was,'' said Santo, who played on some of the best Cubs teams of the last 60 years, and seven seasons for Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher. ''The great ones are like that.''

For instance, Piniella was as miffed by ugly pitching Tuesday in San Diego as he was pleased by the Cubs' three-homer, nine-run hitting night for a comeback victory that gave them their first road series win in two months.
