Article: Ex-village president: Embrace golf carts

To combat congestion and skyrocketing fuel prices, former Wheeling Village President Bill Hein would like to see cars sharing village roads with golf carts.

Hein pitched the golf cart idea -- which is based on a community in Georgia -- to the Wheeling Village Board June 9 in hopes that village staff will look into its viability.

"It's important that we start to look at this," he said. "We need to control our own destiny."

Citing a portion of the Illinois vehicle code, Hein said properly equipped golf carts -- those with hydraulic breaks, front and rear lights, horns and turn signals -- are allowed on the road if the local municipality approves a similar ordinance.
