Article: Be safe when using your fire pit

PLAINFIELD - With the growing popularity of fire pits, the Plainfield Fire Protection District has some safety guidelines for you to keep in mind while enjoying your outdoor fire pit.

"Fire pit" is often used to describe outdoor burning confined to brick or stone enclosures, portable metal containers and chimineas.

1. Fire pits should be kept at least 10 feet from combustible construction and three feet from everything else.

2. Do not put your fire pit under trees. A spark or ember could ignite foliage and branches.

3. Always keep a garden hose, fire extinguisher, or bucket of sand for extinguishing a small fire that may arise.
