Article: Heart doctor led Loyola hospital, medical school

DR. JOHN R. TOBIN JR. - 1916-2008

While dean of Stritch Medical School at Loyola University, Dr. John R. Tobin Jr. got the greatest satisfaction from watching the new generation of prospective doctors.

"It always excited him to be with young people," said his daughter Dr. Mary Kay Tobin. "He loved instructing them in the proper ways of being a professional. He told them to be thorough with all of their patients. He always said, 'Listen to what they the patients are telling you.' "

Dr. Tobin, 91, died Tuesday at his Oak Brook home.

He was dean of the Stritch School of Medicine from 1985 to 1987. He was a World War II veteran and had a long history as a cardiology specialist and instructor.
