River Grove village trustees have approved an ordinance forbidding businessed to sell spray paint to minors.
The ordinance, approved Aug. 21, outlaws the sale of spray paint and indelible markers to those under 18. It also forbids the possession of such items by minors.
Those found in violation may be fined $25 to $750.
Village President Marilynn May thought of the idea while going to buy spray paint at a Home Depot in Chicago.
"I was going to spray something, a lawn chair," May said. "They said, this is Chicago."
Chicago outlawed the sales of spray paint in 1992 to prevent graffiti. After appeals by the industry, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the ban in 1995.
