Las Paletas was out of the avocado-flavored ones, so Adrienne Muich tried the chai tea flavor.
"It was fabulous. It was just like chai tea," she said.
Muich of Pingree Grove went on vacation last spring to Nashville, Tenn., and visited Las Paletas, a well-known company that makes "gourmet" paletas.
A paleta (pah-lay-ta) is a Mexican ice pop made with fresh fruits or other ingredients. They come in a variety of one-of-a-kind flavors.
The cool, refreshing summer treat is becoming more widely available at mainstream retailers, including some local Wal-Mart stores. Many Hispanic grocers in Elgin carry the ice pops, but South Elgin's Pop's Fast Food owner Fred Trevino may be the first in the ...
