Article: Illinois EPA says it's addressing air quality in areas with soot

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency was well aware the Chicago region would be included in the U.S. EPA's list of non-attainment areas for soot, and the agency is at work to reduce emissions.

"We have a regional problem with fine particle matter on a daily basis," said Laurel Kroack, chief of the Illinois EPA's Bureau of Air, referring to soot by its more formal name.

The problem is wide-ranging, she said. The No. 1 source in the metropolitan area is car and truck traffic. But other sources aren't only located in the city and suburbs.

Coal-fired power plants are the No. 2 cause of soot emissions, and those particles are emitted by plants in the Chicago area and as far away as Indiana, ...
