Chicago Firefighter James D. McNulty didn't tell his family about the job's many dangers until they were behind him.

"He always did a good job of finding balance in his life," said his daughter Annie. "Later in his life, he started sharing stories about gross fires and the awful stuff he saw. He never talked about that at home earlier. We didn't find out until later about the danger."

Mr. McNulty, 61, died of lung cancer in his home in Galena.

A former resident of Chicago, he had been a member of the Chicago Fire Department for 32 years. He was also an accredited marine surveyor for more than 25 years.
