We were in seventh grade when my best friend Cathy told me she was done with New Kids on the Block.
This was the friend who won the unofficial competition we had to see who could plaster her bedroom with more photos of this boy band. She wore all the T-shirts with me. She memorized all the songs with me. She entered (and lost) a local radio station's poster contest for concert tickets and backstage passes - with me.
So this news was only slightly less devastating than when she told me, a few months later, that her family was moving from our Kansas City, Kan., suburb to Atlanta. But I had to admit even I was growing tired of proving my devotion to this group by spending all my baby-sitting ...
