The King College Prep marching band takes it to the streets every summer. In perfect formation the students strut out of the school at 4445 S. Drexel and roll past the Sutherland Hotel, two blocks south of the school, where Louis Armstrong used to play in the lounge and Miles Davis was a regular at Christmas.
They move through the vibes of the original Regal Theater (Duke Ellington, Jackie Wilson) on King Drive. And this year the students discovered they were practicing by the Kenwood home of President-elect Barack Obama, just eight blocks from the school.
They are marching by history.
Now the band is making history.
