The property at 5927 Columbia Ave. has been home to several businesses since the early 1900s. Built in 1917, the Lyndora Hotel was named after the daughter of John M. Hansen, car designer and owner of Standard Steel Car Co. The Columbia Avenue property was owned by Standard, which had a plant in Hammond.
The original intent was to offer housing to Army officers sent to inspect the nearby Standard Steel Car Co. and also for employees of the company.
"It was usual to have a military contingent at factories during wartime," said Richard Lyttle of the Hammond Historical Society.
