Homemade peanut butter and jelly sandwiches appear to be safe, but nationwide recalls of everything from peanut butter cookies to peanut butter ice cream to peanut butter energy bars have consumers wary of many kids' favorite food.

Q. Why should we worry about peanut butter?

A. A salmonella typhimurium outbreak has been traced to a Blakely, Ga., processing plant owned by the Peanut Corporation of America, which makes peanut butter and peanut paste. Those products are used as flavoring in products sold by Wal-Mart, Kellogg, Meijer and others.
