When University of Illinois at Chicago polar researcher Peter Doran published a report seven years ago showing most of Antarctica had cooled in recent years, he didn't expect his scientific work to become ammunition in the political debate about global warming.
But after seeing his research quoted time and time again by the likes of conservative pundit Ann Coulter -- who used it to claim there was still much disagreement among scientists as to whether global warming was a problem -- he crafted another study.
