Navigational systems are hot items -- hot as in high on the theft list.
From Dec. 1, 2007, to Jan 13 of this year, the Elmwood Park Police Department has recorded 79 global positioning system units, said Chief Tom Braglia.
"It's an item much sought after by those less fortunate than others," he said.
To combat this trend, the chief is asking drivers to take extra precautions
"More times than not, people mount these systems on their dash," he said. "The thief will take it right off dashboard and be gone.
"Drivers may try to hide the devices, but thieves know the tell-tale signs. "They'll smash the window. Some people even make is easier by leaving their (vehicle) doors open."
