Article: Signing-day drama thing of the past

Chicago-based recruiting analyst Tom Lemming has been covering the national signing day for 30 years -- but the event never was more bizarre than when then-Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer showed up in 1980 to sign West Aurora running back Alvin Ross.

''There were fewer restrictions in those days,'' Lemming recalled. ''Switzer stayed overnight in Ross' house while the other college coaches waited outside, unaware that Switzer was inside. At 8 o'clock on signing day, Switzer came out of the house with Ross' signature for Oklahoma.''
