Article: You make Santa's Cops a success

In 1990, the Joliet Police Department introduced Shop with a Cop for needy children. These children were identified through the collaborative efforts of the Joliet Police Department's Schools Are For Education (SAFE) Unit and the social workers, teachers, and principals from local public schools.

Initially 20 students, accompanied by uniformed Joliet police officers, were each given $20 for a shopping spree at Kmart.

The program was funded through donations received through employee-sponsored bake sales and raffles as well as from Kmart.
