Illinois recorded a steady drumbeat of mass layoff announcements in March, indicating that jobless rates statewide and in the Chicago area are headed higher.
During the month, 22 employers advised state government of their plans to cut workers, mostly this spring. In total, the companies disclosed they were shedding at least 2,486 jobs.
The number of employers filing the notice and the jobs involved are slightly higher than the totals for February or for March of 2008. Most companies with 75 or more workers have to give the state at least 60 days' notice of deep job cuts.
