Article: Charity begins at work

JOLIET - Marianna Heredia has met some interesting people and seen some interesting places the past few days as an Empress volunteer.

She's among more than 250 Empress employees who have signed up so far as community volunteers until the casino is up and running again after a fire on March 20.

"I'm meeting the most wonderful people," said Heredia, a 16-year Empress employee who works as a dealer at the casino.

"All this time on my hands is a gift, and I don't have to worry now whether I have a job to go back to," she said. "This is the first time in my life I've had a chance to do this."
