JOLIET - Marty Dykas says he'll throw Tom Helwich up against anybody and take his chances.
Dykas is the coach of the Lincoln-Way Central High School baseball team that beat Plainfield South 5-2 in an opening-round game in the WJOL Area Baseball Invite on Friday afternoon. Helwich is his big junior left-handed pitcher and first baseman.
He took a four-hit shutout into the sixth inning before finally tiring after throwing about 100 pitches. He ended up getting nicked for two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked one.
Helwich (2-0) also blasted a 2-0 fastball over the fence in right field for a solo homer in the top of the sixth to extend Central's lead to 4-0. ...
