Chicago-area unemployment rate 9.3 percent in March The Chicago-area's unemployment rate was 9.3 percent in March, up from 9 percent in February and 5.6 percent in March 2008, the Illinois Department of Employment Security reported Thursday. Nonfarm payroll jobs in the metro area totaled 3.67 million last month, down 142,700 from March 2008, the state said.
