'Twas the night after the Tony Awards, and many of the most gifted and most severely underpaid artists from Chicago's storefronts and basement spaces gathered at Park West. They were there to learn the winners of the 2009 Non-Equity Jeff Awards, meaning they were celebrating real theater and the creation of inspired work produced on recession-era budgets.
Receiving top honors at Monday night's ceremony -- invariably a big, laughter-inducing party, with witty commentary supplied by veteran emcee Jon Steinhagen -- were the Hypocrites' brilliantly minimalist reinvention of the Thornton Wilder classic "Our Town," named best production of a play, and Theo Ubique, best musical for its powerhouse ...
