BY WILLIAM LEE staff writer The unsuccessful fight to prevent Gavin Elementary School from closing was driven by more than a desire to save the only school in Chicago Heights named after a prominent black resident. To many, it was more an effort to save a proud symbol and community focal point (some would even say the soul) of the city's struggling east side. After pondering the issue for about three months, the Chicago Heights District 170 school board voted last Monday to close the school, 280 E. 12th St., because of declining enrollment and huge operating costs.
