Article: Launch of a new era

George Drozd stood on the new dock at 95th Street late Thursday morning and helped load his buddy's Lund boat.

''Jesus, it's beautiful,'' he said. He meant the dock.

And the 75-year-old retired pipefitter from the Southeast Side has the experience to know seedier times.

''I have been coming here since I was a kid with my dad [also George],'' Drozd said. He pointed down the shoreline at Calumet Park and said, ''It used to be rocks and wood pilings. And everybody fished with a trolley.''

Over the years, the launch at 95th Street deteriorated into a junk pile that never would have been tolerated at swankier lakefront settings on the North Side or even farther up the South Side.
