Fluidity and flutter. Texture, structure and a sense of place. Grasses offer all of these qualities and also act as a visual indicator of the passage of time -- from spring's green tufts to the exuberant spikes topped with their plumes in mid-summer, followed by the rustling of bleached foliage, they stand as sentries into the winter months.
Grasses such as the feathery, hair-like clouds of Stipa Tennuissima (Mexican Feather grass) will serve as a link between perennials or will stand alone, like the singular, fountain shape of Miscanthus 'Gracillimus' ('Maiden grass') with its waving 5- to 6-foot, copper-red inflorescences.
