Chicago's Sears Tower has morphed, officially at least, into Willis Tower, a k a "the Big Willie." In 2001, the old Standard Oil Building, a k a "Big Stan," became the Aon Center. What then, will happen to "Big John"?

The John Hancock Center, arguably the most dynamic and classy of Chicago's super-skyscrapers, would seem a candidate for a different identity. The John Hancock insurance firm, now part of Manulife Financial Corp., hasn't had much to do with the 100-story building since it sold it in 1998. It doesn't even have an office there. On architecture blogs where the Sears Tower name change is still a hot topic, commentators wonder about the Hancock.
