WILMINGTON - The Island City is ready to celebrate Catfish Days.
This year's events center on North Island Park, with activities slated to begin today and continue through Sunday.
Catfish dinners are a specialty of many restaurants during the annual celebration.
Catfish are part of the city's folklore, dating back to the turn of the century, when Forked Creek spilled over its banks and flooded the cellars of a section of Wilmington called, "Catfish Town." This section was in a hollow behind the Chicago and Alton railroad depot.
A Catfish Days Committee, sponsored by the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, was established to organize the event. Mayor Marty Orr is the Catfish Days chairman for ...
