BATAVIA - The city will be cutting back on its Christmas cheer this year, as aldermen last week voted to reduce the holiday decorations program.

In past years, the city has decked out Wilson Street, Island Avenue, Houston Street and Batavia Avenue at an estimated cost of $40,000 to $80,000 for materials and labor. The 2008 Christmas decorations cost the city an estimated $48,000, which included an accounting for labor from the city's electric and street departments. The plan this year is to reduce the decorations significantly, but retain some of the traditional elements the community has become accustomed to seeing each year, according to city staff.
