Aalto, Hugo Alvar Henrik (1898–1976). Finnish architect, among the most important C20 designers, he started his career as a Neoclassicist in Jyväskylä (1923–7), but, influenced by CIAM and by Aino Marsio (1894–1949)—his wife and partner from 1925—became involved in International Modernism after his office moved to Turku. The Standard Apartment Block, Turku (1927–9), incorporated prefabricated concrete units, while the Turun Sanomat Building (1928–30) was the first of his designs to incorporate Le Corbusier's *‘ Five Points of a New Architecture’.
