crime
The violation of laws, or more precisely those social norms that have become subject to state control and legal sanctions reliant on punishment. Crime is thus distinct from
deviance
, which describes any violation of social norms, including those that are merely subject to societal or group disapproval. The definition of crime consequently plays a strong role in social integration, determining the essential boundaries of behavior in society. This is the core principle of a broad range of functionalist accounts of crime and deviancy, which recognize the enormous social power of expelling or punishing the transgressor.
