Libertarian Party.
Founded in Colorado in 1971, the Libertarian party became a significant, if somewhat exotic, variation on late twentieth‐century antigovernment politics. Dedicated to challenging “the cult of the omnipotent state,” the party nominated its first presidential candidate in 1972 on a platform best described as antigovernment fundamentalism. Among other things, it demanded an immediate or eventual end to: mandatory
taxation
; all social
welfare
and economic subsidies; government funding for
education
; and any government restrictions on
immigration
