Perry, Oliver Hazard (1785–1819) and Matthew (1794–1858),
naval officers.Born in Rhode Island, the sons of Captain Christopher R. Perry, both enjoyed distinguished careers. Oliver Hazard Perry in 1798 became a midshipman on board his father's ship, the
General Greene
, which attacked French commerce and supported Haitian revolutionaries during the
Quasi‐War with France
. After service in the Mediterranean he directed construction of gunboats in 1807–1809 before taking command of the schooner
Revenge.
