Proclaimed on 30 December 1922, brought into effect in July 1923, and formally brought into existence with the new constitution on 1 January 1924. Founded purely on the basis of communist ideology, not nationality, the Russian, Byelorussian (now Belarus), Ukrainian, and Transcaucasian republics combined to form the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (in Russian, Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik); the ‘Soviet Union’ was the shortened version of the name.
