Juan Carlos I (1938– )
King of Spain (1975– ). Named by
Franco
as his successor, Juan Carlos has steered his country from dictatorship to democracy. Son of Don Juan de Bourbon, Count of Barcelona, and grandson of Alfonso XIII of Spain, Juan Carlos was born in Rome and educated privately in Switzerland and later in Spain.
