A project for making a pictorial record of Britain begun in 1939 at a time when widespread destruction was expected to occur during the Second World War. It was sponsored by the Pilgrim Trust, a foundation established in 1930 by the American philanthropist Edward Harkness (1874–1940) ‘to help preserve the national heritage of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and to promote the future well-being of the country and its people'.
