Éluard, Paul (pseudonym of Eugène Grindel ) (1895–1952). French writer, patron, collector, entrepreneur, draughtsman, and collagist, a leading figure of Surrealism from the beginning of the movement. Éluard is best known as one of the outstanding French poets of the 20th century, but he was deeply interested in the visual arts and was a friend of many distinguished painters, several of whom he commissioned to illustrate his books (notably Max Ernst , Man Ray , and Picasso ).
