Ramseur, Stephen Dodson (1837–1864) Confederate army officer, born in North Carolina. Ramseur was an ardent defender of slavery; in 1861 he resigned his commission in the U.S. Army and within a few weeks had received an appointment in the Confederate army, rapidly rising to the position of major of artillery. In 1862 he was commissioned colonel of the 49th North Carolina Infantry; in that position he was seriously wounded at Malvern Hill in July of that year.
