Ahura Mazda The chief god of the ancient Iranians (see Mazdaism ) and later the Zoroastrians (see Zoroastrianism ), Ahura Mazda or Oromazdes or Ohrmazd first came to Iran during the Aryan (Indo-Iranian) invasions of the second millennium BCE as one of the ahura gods whose roots were in the ancient Indo-European past. His equivalent among the Aryans who invaded India at about the same time would have been Indra (see Indra ) as revealed in the ṛg Veda (see ṛg Veda ). It also seems likely that Ahura Mazda's nature is related to the Vedic Varuṇa (see Varuṇa ).
