Moscow, 18 Apr. 1940). Russian dancer, choreographer, and company director. He studied at the Moscow Ballet School, a student of Mikhail Gabovich, and graduated into the Bolshoi Ballet in 1958. He was quickly promoted to principal dancer and for the next twenty years was the Bolshoi's biggest male star. Heroic and dynamic, and with an unparalleled virtuoso technique, he came to embody the strong new Bolshoi male. He displayed his dramatic athleticism to superb effect in his greatest role, Spartacus, but was also acclaimed for the romantic intensity of his Albrecht.
