Copenhagen, 3 Oct. 1931). Danish composer. Studied Copenhagen with Gade; worked as an orchestral violinist before making his reputation as a composer of symphonic music. In 1908 became conductor of the Royal O, resigning 1914. By the time of his death he was the most respected Danish composer of his generation.
