Harriman, William Averell

New York City, 15 Nov. 1891; d. 26 July 1986) US; US ambassador to Russia 1943–6, ambassador to Britain 1946, Secretary of Commerce 1946–8, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary 1948–50, Special Assistant to the President 1950–1, Governor of New York 1955–8 The son of a railway magnate and self-made millionaire, Harriman was educated at Groton before graduating from Yale in 1913.
