Joseph
Son of Jacob and Rachel; his story is told in
the book of Genesis
(chs. 37–50). Joseph, Jacob's favourite son, is hated by his brothers because of his dreams that one day they will all bow and pay homage to him. The brothers plot to kill Joseph but he is saved by passing merchants who sell him in Egypt where he becomes the slave of Potiphar, a high-ranking Egyptian. Potiphar's wife tries to seduce Joseph but he resists her blandishments. As a result Joseph is put in prison where he interprets successfully the dreams of two Egyptian officials who are imprisoned with him.
