. From the earliest times, Jews have considered peace to be among the highest values. The Talmudic Rabbis refer to peace as the vessel in which all blessings are contained. The traditional Jewish greeting is: ‘Shalom alekhem’ (‘Peace to you’), to which the response is: ‘Alekhem Shalom’ (‘To you Peace’). Nowadays, this is often shortened simply to Shalom. Typical of the high regard Jews have for peace is the ruling that Jews must not use the Shalom greeting in the public bathhouse because Shalom is one of the
names of God
