Yom Kippur ‘Day of Atonement’, the great fast on 10 Tishri. The Yom Kippur ritual in Temple times was based on the vivid description in Leviticus 16. On this day, the High Priest was to discard his garments of splendour and, wearing only the plain linen tunic, breeches, girdle, and turban of the common priest, he was to enter the Holy of Holies, the most sacred spot in the Sanctuary, there to atone for his own sins, those of his household, and those of the whole community of Israel.
