Church leaders, dental students and residents of the Nicetown-Tioga section
of the city are determined to keep a liquor store from opening in their
community.
The diverse groups gathered Wednesday in front of the future site of A Wine
& Spirits Shoppe on Broad Street near Allegheny Avenue to protest.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board was approved to build the Wine &
Spirits Shoppe. It will be one of several new stores to open by September,
alongside Rite-Aid, Dunkin Donuts, Subway and PNC Bank. Community members
said they are pleased businesses are attracted to their neighborhood, but
they don't need a liquor store.
