Swim: Back injury forces Phelps out of world swim meet

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, Oct 8 AFP - Six-time Athens Olympic swim champion Michael Phelps
today withdrew from the World Short Course Championships due to a back injury that doctors
said could threaten his career.

Phelps, who won the 200 freestyle title yesterday, came into the meet with a sore back.

The 19-year-old American skipped the 400m individual medley heats and announced he
was pulling out today after advice from physicians.

"They made the decision it would be better for me not to swim," Phelps said.
