BANGKOK, Oct. 12, 2004 (IPS/GIN) -- Faced with a high fatality
rate from bird flu since July, Thailand has mounted a vigorous
campaign to strengthen its public health surveillance system that
is meant to detect signs of infectious diseases.
The first phase of this drive, due to last till the end of
October, includes an army of public health volunteers visiting
communities affected by the lethal H5N1 avian flu virus to conduct
tests on people with respiratory illnesses.
