Slipping an emerald-hued suede coat over her shoulders, Cathy Tchorznicki stood before a long mirror, oblivious to 1,400 frenzied bargain-hunters in the background.

"Do you think it looks pretty?" she asked her sister, voice raised over the crowd.

"For $5?" replied an incredulous Joann Scapkow. "Yes!"

The pair joined a horde of shopaholics beneath a giant tent in Central Park, searching for discounts at a huge tag sale held on the city's front lawn.
