Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman pleaded not guilty Monday to felony charges of misusing public funds.

Workman has been placed on paid administrative leave while she faces two charges of taking $17,000 in health department funds to place a bookkeeper at a boys and girls club where her daughter was a top financial officer.

Her trial was scheduled for February.

Workman has said the charges against her are politically motivated, and that the money was being used to help children. Her attorney, Democrat attorney general candidate Greg Skordas, said he expects her to be vindicated. "We always have and we always will," he said.
